I love this Aaisha- so beautifully put ‘That’s why I hate New Year’s. I want every morning to be a new year’s for me. Every day I want to reckon with myself, and every day I want to renew myself. No day set aside for rest. I choose my pauses myself, when I feel drunk with the intensity of life and I want to plunge into animality to draw from it new vigour’
Great post, I love the twist you’ve given to your simmering resentment of commercial celebrations here, channeling it into a trip back to a difficult time.
Nothing wrong really with being annoyed that your time is forcibly co-opted into Christmas and New Year though. There are plenty of kindred souls out there, this reader included. I’m just keeping it as chill as I can from now on, but always happy when it’s over.
as a youngster I remember hearing the song ‘Stop, children, what’s that sound’ by Buffalo Springfield, playing often over the airways of local radio stations in the region of the north coast where I grew up.
I always liked the melody of the song, the gentle sounds of the instruments & the way it made my sense of hearing really take notice right to the very end of the track . . but I never really understood the meaning behind the lyrics, until now, after reading your article this morning.

Times have changed, but have they?
Unfortunately not enough!

Thanks Ally, I loved discovering the story behind it too!
To the point that I could sing the Tim Minchin ode to Christmas at family carols IF “I really liked Christmas” - but sadly, I don’t. So there.
I had to go and listen to that song, I hadn’t heard it. Great song but I’m still with you too!
It’s a corker and he is a witty soul. Glad you got to hear it! But yes, as if one could sing this, feeling as we feel 😆
