I really didn’t get it until I found a back lane joint in Athens and then retsina and a Greek salad turned into something quite different from anything I’d ever had before. Now I want to get amongst it again thanks to your descriptions ♥️. A long way from my sheltered 19year old self on my first honeymoon on the liner Patris (Syd-Bris en route to Piraeus) when my seasickness caused a decade long avoidance of anything Greek 😂
Jane, let's plan a Greek date soon! How fabulous that you just stumbled upon that taverna on your honeymoon, I love it. And I just remembered that you and Mouse and Peter sailed on the same cruise ship too!
Greek music is fabulous ! 👍 I could never even imagine, any dining experience at a Greek venue being dull or uneventful . . They know how to gather the people, lift their moods higher & certainly entertain 👍
It was mostly during the 90’s to the beginning of the 2000’s in surry hills, when it was more villagy & knowing the majority of the locals, as
you passed them on the street.
And yep . . one of them being you, Lo ! 😉
You always said hello to me, whenever we passed by each other on Bourke st. You would often stroll along smiling with great karma 👌 with a little one, sound asleep in the pram . . maybe 'baby Holiday' ?
I would quite often sit and talk to many of the older Greek residents & shop owners ( do you remember the two older gentlemen running the corner store opposite the Hopetoun ) 😂
One of them sang 🎶 the same words on repeat . . while the taller one that chain smoked, taught me Greek words as we sat on the milk crates outside . . great times & fond memories xx
What are they planning to do with the Hopetoun, Lo ? Is it still all boarded up & dark looking ?
Many evenings were spent there . . with Jonny & also when he played. Lindy & Amanda nights & a lady by the name of Lo Carmen nights !
Such wonderful years, decades & beer hang overs . . Glad I have given up the hops & schooners . . Bourbon treats me well - I don’t get pissed or lose my short term memory of getting home. Beer makes me feel sick & sleepy
I love that I'm smiling and friendly in your memories Ally! Surry Hills was certainly a little village back then - and I sure remember that deli - pretty sure the lovely old fella that made the cassette was called 'The Ha Ha Man'. I'm not sure of what's happening with the Hopetoun, still sad and boarded up as far as I know, but I do know there is a documentary being made about It! Here's to getting older and wiser - opa! x
My father played flute in a Greek orchestra called Tsinakis when I was a kid. It featured some great musicians, but I never saw them live. I spent 7 weeks on a Greek cruise ship, immigrating to New Zealand for the second time and was immersed in Greek Music. The band let me play guitar with them whenever I wanted to, which was most of the time, even on a Sunday, so I had a reasonable Ta pedia tou Pirea.
What a wonderful experience for you to get to play and be immersed in the music like that! In must be in your blood from your dad's time in the orchestra. My dad also played on a Greek cruise ship, from Australia to Greece in the late 60s. Happy Sunday Luigi!
Cool! One of the younger guys in the orchestra was related to the family who owned Chandris Lines. Sadly he was not on the wealthy side of the family. :) He and his wife became good friends of mine, and they were great traditional Greek cooks.
Lovely! Makes me remember the months I lived on several Greek Islands when young. Beautifully written, as always. ❤️
How fantastic! I'd love to spend some time there.
