I love this installment Lo. I think one of the great joys of travel is NOT understanding the local lingo. Kind of makes you feel like a child. A bit frustrated at not being understood, but also exciting when you figure out what's being said or written.
I did a job in Spain years ago, that required me to buy a bunch of hardware and tech stuff. I ended up pretending I was a mute and carrying a little sketch pad and drawing everything I needed. I got pretty good and even managed to get the correct pressure regulator coupling for an LPG bottle. That took 3 pages! Felt like I was living in a game of PICTIONARY.
A local cafe had translated their menu into sort of English..I'm still trying to figure out what "Rape of an American" was, but it was 500 pesetas and it sounded fishy so I never ordered it.
Just going down a wee rabbit hole on Pidgin English...
My favourite Google examples so far:
A brassiere being described as “basket blong titty”.
A toothbrush is “broom blong tut” (brush belonging to tooth),
and my favourite so far
A helicopter is “Mixmaster blong Jesus Christ”.
I want to learn it but it's not very useful for travel.
I also love being completely out of my depth language wise when travelling- it’s a nice anonymous feeling, like you’re an observer of another world…. I can see you would be a wonderful mute, lucky you have such good drawing skills… those pidgin English words are gold ❤️
I have so many great Duolingo screenshots on my phone. Mostly weird sayings about cats that gain weight from snacking too much. En français
Duolingo is obsessed with cats and neighbors… so bizarre!
