“We were the people who were not in the papers. We lived in the blank white spaces at the edges of print. It gave us more freedom. We lived in the gaps between the stories.”
“The true story of post-punk, or underground, or independent music is not about the huge bands that had massive hits,” Keenan adds. “It's about the bands that recorded one demo cassette, people who put on three shows, who published a fanzine. [...] It takes a level of belief and bloody-minded commitment to come through with that kind of art.”
I played in tin sheds, mates houses and once in an old chook shed. Playing in a band, our own original tunes was the genuine thrill of my creative life. Your wonderful writing evokes my memory while honouring yours. Thank you Lo.
Isn’t it cool how specific and yet very generally relatable our experiences of the world are! Sheds are my favourite places to play, what great vibes they have.
Goodbar was a gas . Paul Stenmark was onto it & seeing you guys downstairs late was a blast. The Cruel Sea residency was pretty great as well. Fun times & Zanzibar as well, when Kellet st was alive every night .
You summed it all up perfectly! Yes those Goodbar shows didn’t start til 2am I think? I keep wondering if that can be true but I’m pretty sure it was. And I loved Zanzibar nights very much too, great vibe there.
Love hearing about past experiences, adventures & at times mind blowing, surprising, and living on the edge, taking risks & surviving any circumstances that can appear unannounced before your very eyes .
Dear ol’ Kinselas hey 😉 what an amazing building & It’s past history . . I have danced so many times in there, upstairs & down in the front bar at 6 am, I couldn’t possibly even count the amount in figures on my hands . . But I can say for sure, that I could never imagine ever, being inside that place for a whole night totally alone 👻 as a dare or for a million bucks - No way, I would be terrified.
There were so many wonderful old warehouses close by and down the road from Kinselas.
Many turning into dream like ( for me ) residences, but sadly those developers saw bucks in their eyes & demolished / delibrately burnt down beautiful parts of history, around the Taylor Sq area 😔
‘I have a short film wrap party story to tell you about one day, & my experience while there . . it was in one of those gorgeous old warehouses during the 90’s ‘ 👍
I will look forward to hearing your story Ally! Thank you for your lovely comments- I don’t think I’d like to spend the night alone in Kinselas either but yes what a deep and amazing history that whole area has 🌹

Ha I relate hard to that bloody minded commitment comment!
