I've just listened to She’s Your Lover Now and got completely absorbed in all the lyrics. Such a great character sketch, not just of one character but an incestuous little bar scene! Greg Dulli from Afghan Whigs wrote some pretty brutal songs about exes, not least What Jail is Really Like. Best listened to, rather than just read, to get the full visceral effect!

Just went down an Afghan Whigs hole. Agreed best listened to! That song really reminds me of Hole. It’s great. And yeah Bob just eviscerates an entire scene there doesn’t he!

“It wasn't vengeance - it wasn't Anna Karenina.” OOOOH I LOVE IT. I would love to have written that song, and to have a one-liner like that about it!!!!

Very fine post, thank you !!

Love the connections you make in this piece, Lo! I can't get that image out of my head from Alanis: "I was writing it so I didn't get sick. I was writing it to get it out of my body." I love your song, too, Lo! Nice backing vocals from the great Robyn Hitchcock. He didn't follow your advice in the lyrics and is in a relationship with fellow singer Emma Swift. I really dig her album of Dylan covers, with the perfect title Blonde on the Tracks.

It is one of the greatest album titles in recent memory! And such a beautiful, mesmerising album too. Pretty sure Robyn & Emma have got this singer loving thing all worked out. And yes that Alanis quote is quite amazing, I really loved it. Thanks Graley.

Then we wouldn’t have anything to write about.

Excellent point! Makes me think of Lucinda Williams song 'World Without Tears': If we lived in a world without tears

How would bruises find

The face to lie upon

How would scars find skin

To etch themselves into

How would broken find the bones

Oh that is so beautiful. My dad took me to see Lucinda once. What a woman. One of her musicians asked me out afterwards. I declined - much to Dad’s dismay 😉 I think he wanted to live vicariously.

She is sensational, and that's a funny story about your dad!

I had to go back for more... the internet is dangerous ....now I feel like I know far too much about TS's relationship timeline.... and that Tom was a Getaway Car. Makes all the songs hits different when one knows this stuff...

Great read Lo.

So many songs I grew up with had such vitriolic lyrics which got mixed up in static on my old transistor. (Look it up kids)

Positively 4th Street sprang to mind of course, thanks for the great read.🙏
