‘ I remember tearing up while out shopping in a supermarket, during past couple of years . . . hearing the Pet Shop Boys version of ‘always on my mind’, on the speaker system above me in the store ‘
'When I First Met Your Ma' is one of my favourites too - what a beauty! I've teared up in the supermarket too at weird random songs. I always wonder if making playlists for Wooliies and Coles is somebody's full time job... and how they choose... might have to research that one day! x
I was thinking, "I'm not that into love songs." Then I started looking through the #Top500Songs that accompany my Substack and there are loads of them! I will only share a few. I'm glad you didn't ask for the number one, because I would really struggle. So here we go:
-Killing Me Softly, the Roberta Flack version, not the remix
-Steppin Out, the Phil Guy version is magic
-My Funny Valentine, favourite vocal version is Rickie Lee Jones
-Wonderful Tonight which showed a new side to Eric Clapton
-Still Got the Blues, by Gary Moore. You have to love the guitar lead hook.
-Since I've Been Loving You, Led Zeppelin
-I'd Rather Go Blind, first recorded by Etta James
I don't like choosing favourites either - these things morph and change! 'Killing Me Softly' is an incredible song, remarkable lyrics. My dad is singing 'My Funny Valentine' at our upcoming show, he sounds a bit Tom Waits-y and its beautiful. Love that Rickie Lee version too. Thanks for sharing Luigi!
Nice. I'd love to hear your dad singing it. I have put together a guitar version of My Funny Valentine. I listened to about 20 different jazz guitar versions and then created my own. Did something similar with Killing Me Softly.
loved loved reading your thoughts on love songs Lo ...reminds me of another song with a huge transformation and interesting story attached to it's morphing - The first time ever i saw your face....if you get the chance to hear the original by Ewan MacColl to Roberta's sublime slow burn it's hardly recognisable ...thanks for telling us great stories XXX
Thanks Gyan! I l always thought that was an original for Roberta - I looked up the Ewan MacColl version and read the story behind it all - really fascinating stuff! My favourite bit was that MacColl had a special section in his record collection for cover versions of his song that he called the 'Chamber of Horrors'! Hilarious x
and boy was i happy my version wasn't placed in that section of HORRORS as my friend Cal MacColl ( Ewans Son) played it to his mum Peggy Seeger and she approved phew!
