’We’re in a dark woods now, and there’s a soft breeze blowing through some sycamore trees…there’s a moon out…and you can hear the hoot of an owl… just get me into that beautiful darkness with a soft wind…oh that’s it, that’s so beautiful;, you’re tearing my heart out, now keep falling….keep falling’
These are the words David Lynch was saying as he sat next to composer Angelo Badalamenti while he made his first fumbling attempt at finding a feel for Twin Peaks on his beat up Fender Rhodes.
By the end of the session, David said ‘That’s it, that’s Twin Peaks!’.
Angelo replied ‘OK I’ll work on it’ - but David told him ‘It’s already done’.
All hail the great David Lynch, a man who deeply understood that the mysteries of life are sometimes so mysterious that they’re right in front of us and we can’t even see them.
I have watched this video over and over and it brings such joy every time. I hope it does the same for you.
As someone that has nary received an album review without it containing the word ‘Lynchian’, sometimes for reasons I can’t understand, I feel a certain connection to David Lynch and the greatest admiration for the wonderment of his vision that embraces the whole damn thing, from the darkest, wildest corners of our imaginations to the tenderest, gentlest moments in time.
Have fun in the Great Beyond Mr Lynch, I know you will.
Wise thought for the day, or to keep in your pocket for life, from David Lynch:
“Keep your eye on the donut and not on the hole.”

PS: I’m not even going to pretend I know how to sum up his career and achievements etc but upon reading this news of his death, I find myself thinking about ‘The Straight Story’, the most achingly wholesome Lynchian two hours you’ll ever spend, trying not to weep. Do yourself a favour sometime. https://www.rogerebert.com/features/the-straight-story-25th-anniversary
A great Sandro Miller photograph of David Lynch.
Nice.
The Straight Story is a wonderful film. That was also a beautiful video to share. Thank you.
